Arusha Tour Overview

Mount Meru is often overshadowed by its famous neighbor, Kilimanjaro, but it offers a unique and rewarding challenge for those seeking a memorable climb. As Tanzania's second-highest mountain at 4566 meters (14,979 ft), it’s a dormant volcano that last erupted in 1910. With a trek that takes just 3 to 4 days, it's an ideal option for those wanting a taste of high-altitude trekking without committing to the full Kilimanjaro ascent, or for those looking to acclimatise before tackling the higher summit of Kilimanjaro. It’s also perfect for trekkers seeking a quieter, less-crowded experience, but don’t be fooled—it still requires proper acclimatisation for a successful summit.

Your journey begins with a guided walk through Arusha National Park via the Momella route, accompanied by an armed park ranger for safety against potential animal threats. Keep your eyes peeled for baboons, giraffes, zebras, colobus monkeys, and a wide range of bird species. The trail takes you through diverse vegetation zones, from lush montane forests to moorland, semi-desert, and alpine desert. Along the way, you'll witness the stunning transformation of the landscape as you approach the magnificent crater.

The final stretch involves traversing the crater rim to reach the summit, Socialist Peak at 4566 meters. Once at the top, you’ll have time to explore the ash cone that formed during the 1910 eruption, offering a fascinating insight into the mountain’s volcanic history.

Arusha Tour Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival

All trekkers are responsible for arranging their own flights to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). Upon arrival at JRO, we will provide a private transfer to your hotel. That evening or the following morning, you will meet your local Kilimanjaro & Safari Treks representative for a comprehensive pre-climb briefing.

Day 2

Momela Gate to Mirikamba Hut

After breakfast, we will pick you up from your hotel and drive to Arusha National Park, where we will check all our permits at the Park Headquarters. From there, we continue by vehicle to the Momella Park Gate, where our trek will begin. It is a requirement on this route that an armed Park Ranger accompanies us to ensure our safety against any wild animal threats. The trail takes us through lush montane forest, past waterfalls and uniquely shaped trees, leading us to Miriakamba Hut.

Day 3

Mirikamba Hut to Saddle Hut

As we ascend higher on Mount Meru, you'll notice the air becoming cooler and slightly thinner. Today, we will climb over 1000 meters to reach Saddle Hut at 3550m. In the afternoon, you'll have time for an acclimatisation hike, gaining another 300 meters to Little Meru at 3820m. Be sure to bring your camera to capture the stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro, located more than 80 kilometers away.

Day 4

Saddle Hut to Socialist Peak to Momela Hut

We begin early around 2 a.m., following the path through scrubland to Rhino Point at 3820 meters. From here, the route becomes more challenging as we navigate the narrow crater ridge, eventually reaching the summit after approximately 4-5 hours. At Socialist Peak, we will witness a breathtaking sunrise over Mount Kilimanjaro and have time to explore Meru's crater and ash cone. After soaking in the views, we will descend by retracing our steps back to Saddle Hut, then continue down to Miriakamba Hut, and finally to Momella Gate. From there, we’ll transfer you to your hotel for a well-earned shower and celebration of your achievement.

Day 5

Departure

After a well-deserved night’s rest, we will bid you farewell. If you have arranged airport transfers with us or have a safari/Zanzibar trip planned, we will collect you in the morning for your onward journey.
