Kilimanjaro Tour Overview

The Rongai route is one of Kilimanjaro's less-traveled paths, offering a more peaceful trek with minimal crowds. Its flatter terrain does not follow the "climb high, sleep low" principle, which means it’s important to allow extra days for acclimatization to minimize the risk of altitude sickness.

Beginning at the Rongai Gate, the route takes you through a variety of climate zones, each providing its own unique scenery. The more remote nature of the Rongai route allows for a more pristine wilderness experience, and there’s a good chance of encountering wildlife such as elephants, buffalo, and antelope. On day two, you'll reach Kikelewa Caves, where the views of the Amboseli Plains in Kenya unfold. The path leads you up to Mawenzi Peak, before crossing the barren Saddle, a vast plain connecting Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The final summit ascent rewards you with breathtaking views from both the southern and northern sides of the mountain as you descend via the more popular Marangu route.

The Rongai route is ideal during the rainy season, as it sits in Kilimanjaro's rain shadow, meaning it generally experiences much less rain than the southern routes, making it an excellent choice for those hoping to avoid wet conditions while trekking.

Kilimanjaro Tour Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival

All trekkers need to organize their own flights to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). From there, we will arrange a private transfer to your hotel. That night or early the next morning, you will meet with your local representative for a full pre-climb briefing to ensure you're fully prepared for the trek.

Day 2

Rongai Trailhead to Simba Camp

After breakfast, we’ll transfer you from your hotel to Marangu Gate for registration. From there, we’ll continue to the Rongai trailhead, which is about a 2½-hour drive. Once we arrive, our porters will prepare and pack your supplies and luggage. We’ll begin our ascent through the village of Nale Moru, where the small winding path crosses maize fields. The trail gradually climbs through a scenic pine forest, leading us to our first camp at First Cave, located at an altitude of 2,600 meters.

Day 3

Simba Camp to Kikelelwa Camp

The trail continues toward Kibo, passing the Second Cave (3450m) along the way, and reaching the Kikelewa Caves at 3600m. As you ascend, the views begin to expand, revealing the vastness of Mount Kilimanjaro. The moorland shrubs become sparser as you pass the Second Cave, and temperatures start to drop, signaling your progress into higher, colder elevations.

Day 4

Kikelelwa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn

A short but steep climb up grassy slopes leads to stunning panoramic views, offering a true sense of wilderness. As we leave the vegetation behind, we arrive at Mawenzi Tarn (4330m), beautifully nestled in a cirque beneath the imposing spires of Mawenzi. The afternoon is free for rest or exploration, allowing you to adjust to the altitude and enhance acclimatization.

Day 5

Mawenzi Camp to Kibo Camp

We traverse the barren, lunar landscape of the ‘Saddle’ that connects Mawenzi and Kibo, reaching Kibo Campsite (4750m) at the base of the Kibo crater wall. The rest of the day is dedicated to relaxation and preparation, ensuring you're well-rested for the challenging final ascent tomorrow.

Day 6

Kibo Camp to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut

You’ll be woken around 23:30 for a quick tea and biscuits before we begin the tough ascent. The initial section of the trail is a rocky path leading to the Hans Meyer Cave at 5150m. From there, we’ll zigzag upwards toward Gilman’s Point on the crater rim at 5681m. This section is extremely steep with stone scree, making it the most physically demanding part of the climb. Beyond Gilman’s Point, we may encounter snow all the way to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5895m. Once we reach the summit, we'll capture photographs if weather permits before descending back to Kibo Campsite. From there, we continue down to Horombo Hut for an overnight stay. Later, we enjoy a well-deserved last dinner on the mountain, followed by a restful sleep.

Day 7

Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

After breakfast, we begin our descent, passing Mandara Hut on the way down to the Marangu Gate. Once we reach the gate, a vehicle will be waiting to transfer you back to your hotel. There, you'll enjoy a well-earned shower and celebrate the accomplishment of your Kilimanjaro adventure.

Day 8

Departure

After a much-needed night’s rest, we will bid you goodbye. If you have arranged airport transfers withus or a safari / Zanzibar trip, we will collect you in the morning for your onward journey.
