Moshi and Kilimanjaro Tour Overview

Lemosho is our top pick for reaching the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, offering stunning views, abundant wildlife, excellent acclimatization opportunities, and a lower traffic of climbers. After a 4-hour drive from Moshi to Londorossi Gate, you'll arrive on the western slope of the mountain, where the route leads to the renowned Shira Plateau. From there, you'll begin your journey through diverse climate zones, ranging from alpine meadows to the eternal ice. The ascent is gradual and steady, with the highest success rate among all Kilimanjaro routes.

We offer both 7- and 8-day programs, allowing you to choose based on your available time. Longer programs are recommended for better acclimatization.

Moshi and Kilimanjaro Tour Itinerary

Day 1
All trekkers are responsible for booking their flights to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). Upon arrival, we will arrange a private transfer to your hotel. You will meet your local ZAFS representative either that evening or the following morning for a comprehensive pre-climb briefing.
Day 2
After breakfast, you'll be picked up from your hotel and driven to Londorossi Gate, which is about a 3.5-hour journey from Moshi. After completing the registration process, you'll continue for another 12 km along a forest track to reach the Lemosho starting point. Here, you'll begin your trek through the pristine and untouched rainforest as you start your ascent. While the trek is not particularly challenging, it offers ample time for acclimatization and the chance to observe Tanzania’s wildlife. You’ll likely spot Black and White Colobus monkeys and small antelopes, with the occasional sighting of buffalos and elephants. After 3 to 4 hours of hiking, you'll reach Mti Mkubwa Camp, also known as Big Tree Camp, named for the towering conifer trees that provide shade to the campsite.
Day 3
On the second day, you’ll rise early for breakfast and begin climbing a slightly steeper gradient through the moorland vegetation zone. Here you will start to get fantastic views of Kibo, the summit cone of Mt. Kilimanjaro while continuing along a rocky ridge to Shira Plateau. Shira is a collapsed volcanic crater and was the first of Kilimanjaro’s three volcanic cones to expire. You will then continue to hike across the rocky ridge onto Shira Plateau, where you will be able to see the easterly side and the western breach with its dramatic glaciers. You are now on the west of Kibo Peak and it will take another short walk before reaching the Shira Two Campsite.
Day 4
The route now leads you into semi-desert and rocky terrain surrounding Lava Tower, a 300ft volcanic rock formation. From there, you'll ascend a rocky scree path to Lava Tower, where you'll enjoy stunning panoramic views before descending steeply into the Barranco Valley. This day's trek may feel a bit more challenging, as some hikers may begin to experience symptoms of altitude sickness. Although you'll end the day at nearly the same elevation as you started, this hike serves as excellent acclimatization practice and helps prepare your body for summit day. Barranco Camp is nestled in a picturesque, sheltered valley beneath the imposing Barranco Wall.
Day 5
Today will be a shorter hiking day to aid in acclimatization. After breakfast, you'll begin your ascent of the Barranco Wall and hike through glacial valleys – don't worry, it’s easier than it appears! Once at the top of the wall, you'll cross a series of hills and valleys before descending into Karanga Valley. After a final steeper climb, you'll arrive at Karanga Camp, where you can relax in the afternoon before enjoying dinner and an overnight rest.
Day 6
After breakfast, you'll depart from Karanga and head towards the junction that connects to the famous Mweka Trail. Continuing along a rocky ridge for 1 to 2 hours, you'll reach Barafu Camp, where you'll be treated to breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro’s summit from multiple angles. Your tents will be set up along a narrow, rocky ridge with high winds, so it's a good idea to take some time to get acquainted with your surroundings before nightfall. Rest at Barafu Camp and prepare for the upcoming ascent to the summit.
Day 7
This is where the challenge intensifies! Just before midnight, you'll begin your final ascent to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Heading northwest through the rocky scree, you'll navigate several switchbacks between the Ratzel and Rebmann glaciers until you reach Stella Point (5,685m). This section is the most demanding and will require both physical endurance and mental strength. Move slowly and stay in close communication with your guide.

After a brief rest at Stella Point, you'll continue along the crater rim for about another hour before reaching your ultimate goal – Uhuru Peak! Congratulations! You've reached the "Roof of Africa."

The time you can spend at the summit will depend on weather conditions, but it’s essential to start your descent in good time to ensure you get enough rest back at Barafu Camp. After a well-deserved break, you'll collect your belongings and descend to Mweka Hut (3,100m), where you’ll enjoy dinner and a restful sleep.
Day 8
After breakfast, you'll begin the final, easiest part of your adventure on Mount Kilimanjaro, following a scenic path through the forest to Mweka Gate. Hikers who reached Stella Point and Uhuru Peak will receive their certificates at the gate. Afterward, you'll drive back to your hotel, where you can enjoy a refreshing shower, a delicious dinner, and celebrate your incredible achievement!
Day 9
After a well-deserved night’s rest, we’ll bid you farewell. If you've arranged airport transfers or a safari/Zanzibar trip with us, we’ll collect you in the morning for your onward journey.
