Moshi and Kilimanjaro Tour Overview

The Machame Route is one of the most scenic and popular trails for climbing Kilimanjaro, offering breathtaking landscapes and a high summit success rate. Known as the "Whiskey Route" due to its more challenging nature compared to the "Coca-Cola Route" (Marangu), Machame provides excellent acclimatization through the "climb high, sleep low" approach, increasing your chances of reaching Uhuru Peak.

The trek begins at Machame Gate (1,800m), winding through lush rainforest before ascending to Shira Camp, where it merges with the Lemosho Route. From there, the route traverses the southern slopes of Kilimanjaro, passing Lava Tower and descending to Barranco Camp. Climbers then tackle the Great Barranco Wall, continue through Karanga Valley, and reach Barafu Camp, the base for the final summit push. After conquering Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the descent follows the Mweka Trail, ensuring a varied and well-rounded experience.

Climbers can choose between a six-day or seven-day itinerary. The six-day route skips Karanga Camp, requiring a longer trek to Barafu Camp before the summit attempt. The seven-day option includes an extra day at Karanga Camp, allowing better acclimatization and increasing the likelihood of reaching the summit.

With stunning scenery, diverse landscapes, and a well-structured approach to altitude adaptation, Machame is an excellent choice for adventurers looking to challenge themselves on Africa’s highest mountain.

Moshi and Kilimanjaro Tour Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival

All trekkers are responsible for arranging their own flights to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). Upon arrival, a private transfer will be arranged to take you to your hotel for a comfortable and relaxing start to your adventure. That evening or early the following morning, you will meet with a local representative for a comprehensive pre-climb briefing. This session will cover the trek itinerary, safety guidelines, gear check, and any last-minute questions to ensure you are fully prepared for your Kilimanjaro ascent.

Day 2

Machame Gate to Machame Camp

The trek begins at Machame Gate (1,640m), about an hour’s drive from Moshi, passing through the town of Machame and its surrounding farmlands. The first day's hike covers approximately 11km (7 miles) and takes 5-7 hours to complete.

A packed lunch and 2-3 liters of bottled water are provided at the start of the trek—this will be the only bottled water supplied, as porters will collect and purify water from mountain streams for the rest of the journey.

The trail winds through lush rainforest, where you may spot Colobus monkeys and hear the calls of exotic birds. By the time you arrive at Machame Camp (2,835m)—situated near the transition between the rainforest and low alpine zones—your porters will have already set up camp. A hot dinner will be served before settling in for the night.

Day 3

Machame Camp to Shira Camp 3

After an early breakfast, you will pack your gear and begin the trek from Machame Camp (2,835m) to Shira Camp 2 (3,850m). The trail ascends steeply as you leave the rainforest behind and enter the low alpine zone, characterized by moorlands and grasslands.

As you approach Shira Plateau, you will be rewarded with breathtaking views of Kibo to the northwest and Mount Meru to the east. The day’s trek covers 5km (3 miles) and takes approximately 4-6 hours.

Upon arrival at Shira Camp 2, your porters will have already set up camp, allowing you to relax and acclimatize before enjoying a warm dinner under the open sky.

Day 4

Shira Camp to Barafu Camp via Lava Tower

Day three is a challenging yet rewarding trek as we leave Shira Plateau behind and head eastward through the famous ‘Garden of the Senecios’, a surreal landscape dotted with giant groundsels and lobelias.

The trail gradually ascends to Lava Tower (4,600m), a striking 300 ft volcanic rock formation near the Shark’s Tooth rock feature. We will pause here for lunch and acclimatization, following the ‘walk high, sleep low’ strategy to help adjust to the altitude.

After lunch, we descend to Barranco Camp (3,900m) via the Southern Circuit, offering stunning views of the Western Breach and Breach Wall—a perfect opportunity for photography. The descent takes about 2 hours, and by the time we arrive, the camp will be set up, ready for a well-earned rest.

Day 5

Baranco Camp to Barafu camp

After breakfast, we will tackle the Barranco Wall, a dramatic rock formation that might look intimidating at first but is actually relatively straightforward. The ascent is short and steep, providing a rewarding experience and breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes.

Once at the top of the Barranco Wall, we’ll continue our trek through glacial valleys, offering yet another unique alpine environment. Our journey leads us to Karanga Valley, where we’ll take a break and enjoy lunch, surrounded by stunning views.

After lunch, we follow the Mweka Trail, which takes us along a rocky ridge for approximately 1-2 hours before arriving at Barafu Camp. This camp sits along a narrow, rocky ridge and offers panoramic views of the summit from various perspectives. The winds can be strong, so it's important to get comfortable with the surroundings before it gets dark.

Rest well at Barafu Camp, as the summit push will begin early the next morning.

Day 6

Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

Around midnight, we begin our ascent to the summit—the most demanding part of the trek, both mentally and physically. The cold and wind at this altitude can be intense, making this stretch particularly challenging. We climb through the darkness for several hours, taking frequent but brief breaks along the way. As we near Stella Point (18,900 ft), a breathtaking sunrise emerges over Mawenzi Peak, offering a truly unforgettable sight. Finally, we reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the African continent.

After taking in the summit experience, we begin our descent, heading straight down to Mweka Camp, with a stop at Barafu for lunch. The rocky terrain can be tough on the knees, so trekking poles are highly recommended. As we descend into the upper forest zone, mist or rain is common in the late afternoon. In the evening, we enjoy our final dinner on the mountain and a well-deserved rest.

Day 7

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

On the final day, we make our way down to Mweka Gate, where you will receive your summit certificates. As we descend to lower elevations, the trail may become wet and muddy, so careful footing is essential. From the gate, we continue for about an hour to Mweka Village, where a vehicle will be waiting to transfer us back to Moshi for a well-earned rest.

Day 8

Departure

After a much-needed night’s rest, we will bid you goodbye. If you have arranged airport transfers withus or a safari / Zanzibar trip, we will collect you in the morning for your onward journey.
